Chris Ballard: Well keep getting Andrew Luck questions until he plays

Chris Ballard, like most people across the National Football League, is looking forward to the chance to recharge his batteries a bit over the next few weeks.

But dona€™t get things twisted a€” Ballard is itching for the start of training camp, too.

After a busy, and productive, offseason a€” one that saw the Indianapolis Colts hire a new head coach a brand new coaching staff, as well as bring in a franchise modern-era-high 11-player NFL Draft class a€” Ballard has been satisfied with the work of the team through the offseason workout program, which concludes today with the third and final day of mandatory minicamp.

Yet, ita€™s next montha€™s training camp a€” and the addition of padded practices and preseason games a€” that will really give Ballard and the Colts an opportunity to see what theya€™ve got as they head into the 2018 season.

a€œIa€™m pleased with what Ia€™ve seen so far, but we have a long way to go,a€ Ballard told Colts.coma€™s Bob Lamey this week. a€œYou know, this gamea€™s played in pads, and until we get the pads on, thata€™s when the real evaluation starts.a€

Ballard had more to say on that topic, as well as several others in his one-on-one conversation with Lamey. Herea€™s the entire transcript:

On if hea€™s happy or satisfied with the progress of the team so far this offseason:

a€œYou know, wea€™re going to have a young team. But ita€™s been fun to watch a€” ita€™s fun to be a part of building a team. And we know just from a talent standpoint we needed to add talent. We think we did that through the draft. I think wea€™ll know better when we get into camp. You know, this time of year, when wea€™re not in pads, I really temper my feelings. This is a learning time for all our players a€” all of them; vets, rookies. Theya€™ve got to understand the pace that our new coaching staff wants to play at, the conditioning levels that they need to be at, and I think they understand that now. Eleven good weeks of work a€” ita€™s fun to watch, you know, guysa€™ bodies change, getting used to the amount of running that wea€™re going to do in practice, and thata€™s going to continue and thata€™s going to continue through the season.a€
